Under the  Miss ~ eltoe
The ongoing photo journal of Katoba Dobermans' 2009 "Miss & Mister" Litter   ~   DPCA Futurity Nominated for 2010

I am always interested in seeing/hearing how other breeders or owners "keep" their dogs when they speak of their "Kennel"
Where do breeders' puppies spend their "alone time" ... and where do they sleep at night.
Some crate all day when they are away ... some have converted their garages into indoor/outdoor kennel runs ... some have a separate kennel building ... some take their
dogs to work with them ... some have free run of their homes ... some go to dog-care facilities ... there are so many different arrangements.
I was recently contacted by someone who had driven by my home expecting to come to my "kennel"... unannounced ... when they saw it to be a "house", they didn't stop.
They had gotten my address from the Internet and decided to just to "
come over, see the kennel, and pick out a puppy".
They left this information on a voicemail, and included in their message was a statement to the affect that they would rather buy a puppy from
"someone who is REALLY in the business of breeding", because they would know what they were doing",
and, in that persons opinion, "only backyard breeders have no sign, no kennels, and no open sales facility".
Yikes !!! They could not BE more misdirected, right ?!?!?!!
Well, that is NOT the first time I have had a call, or response such as, that from an interested puppy buyer.
Sadly, some will never "get it" - some will never understand the importance of the ethical in-home hobby breeder.
In seeing some others kennels, and now that we recovered from the broken pipe flood disater ...
... I thought I would share what my "kennels" look like.
Now that the pups are no longer kept in a "group", this is where they stay when I cannot supervise ... and this is where they sleep at night.
They each have their own "kennel", and those who are prone to jumping over have a cover panel above, (similar to dog-sitter-deb's MacGyver contraption - hahaha).
Each dog gets their own 42" round dog bed, a "woobie" (blanket, not shown), a rug, and a hanging water bucket ... and they can take toys in and out whenever they want.
Usually they eat their meals outside, but there is planty enough room in their "rooms".
I like that they each have their own private space ... but can still be near each other ~ they seem to really enjoy this as well.
They each know which "space" belongs to whom ... and when they all run in from outside or are going to bed for the night , they each go right to "their room".
I do not have the luxury of having indoor/outdoor runs YET ... but when I do, it will be the same type of set-up ... with doggie doors ... just taller and wider ~ inside and out.
As soon as the other two puppies have gone home, the big kids will be able to take their spaces back downstairs ~
~ They love "Ruling the Living Room", and while Echo is always upstairs ... both Tyler and Misty sleep much better at night when they have his own private space.
Above ~ Left to Right: one side of the "kennel" area; a single space; Erica LOVES her room ... and she is color coordinated with "her space" :)
